iPod New Volume Software
Attorneys
representing Apple iPod owners in a national class-action lawsuit against
the computer and portable music-player giant today lauded Apple's
decision to provide a way to limit the volume of the popular iPod
devices, but said the company's actions fall far short.
A statement issued by Apple,
on Wednesday, March 29, says the company is providing some iPod owners
the ability to limit volume, a feature available to some European consumers for
years.
"It is good to know that Apple
finally acknowledges that there is a serious flaw with its iPod product, and is
giving U.S. purchasers the same protection it has been giving French purchasers
since 2002," said Steve Berman, an attorney for the plaintiffs. "Unfortunately,
this patch doesn't help the millions of people who own older models -- it is a
jack-legged workaround that falls well short of what consumers demand and
deserve."
According to the Apple
statement, the software only works with the iPod nano and the
fifth-generation iPod.

150 years of Freud
Without Freud, Woody Allen would be a schnook and Tony Soprano a thug; there
would be an Oedipus but no Oedipus complex, and then how would people at dinner
parties explain why the eldest son of George Bush was so intent on toppling
Saddam, reports Senior Editor Jerry Adler in the March 27 Newsweek cover
story, "Freud is Not Dead" (on newsstands Monday, March 20). On the occasion of
his 150th birthday, Adler takes a look at Sigmund Freud-his life and legacy-and
examines how his discoveries and teachings are still put into practice today.
The latest Newsweek Poll about
Freud, taken March 16-17, 2006, reports that 18 percent of Americans polled have
been in therapy. When asked what the main reason is if an adult has
psychological problems, 29 percent of those polled believe that their
relationship with their parents growing up was the main factor; 22 percent say
it is their own fault. When asked if dreams people have often reflect
unconscious desires, 43 percent believe they do; 40 percent do not believe so.
