Mike
Pingel joined legendary Martial Arts Choreographer, Cheung Yan Yuen,
known as The Master, for an one-on-one interview and to take a spin on
the martial arts stunt rigging machine used in Daredevil.
Cheung Yan
Yuen has worked on martial arts choreography for hit films
such as Charlie's
Angels: Full Throttle and The Matrix Revolution. Now he
has brought his expertise to Daredevil.
There I
was at the DVD press premier week of Daredevil strapped
into the high-flying, death-defying acrobat machine which Ben Affleck
& Jennifer Garner used to do their moves in the film. It was one
of the funnest things I have ever done. I also had the great
honor with doing a short Q&A with The Master.
Mike
Pingel: What was the hardest
sequence on the film Daredevil to accomplish?
Cheung Yan Yuen:
The Playground scene, where Ben Afflect is fighting Jennifer Garner.
See, the audience wants to see the stars do the real action. In
this scene, I trained the two actors to do all the stunts themselves.
What made this scene very difficult was that Afflect was to be
portrayed blind.
M:
Do you have a favorite scene in the film?
C: Actually, anything that has the actors themselves. So
in Daredevil, it would be the playground scene.
M:
Do you come up with signature stunts for each character?
C: It is all up to the script, if the script is
requiring the character to be jealous or an emotional person,
then we go with that and tailor our chorography according to the
director's vision.
M:
Was Daredevil one of the hardest films you have worked on?
C: Every film has it's own moments where you feel you
can't go any further. But my films back in Hong Kong are much harder
to choreograph.
M: What
was the difference between doing Daredevil and Charlie's Angels?
C: The difference is that Daredevil after all is more of
a super natural character and Charlie's Angels has a more realness to
them. Simply, Daredevil is more superman like and Angels is more like
everyday life.
M.
Do you have your favorite Angel?
C: I prefer all three girls,
none are smarter an another!
M: What kind of
upcoming projects do you have in the works?
C: I'm going back to China to do a movie right now...and when that
movie is done, I'm coming back to the US.
