CNN Presents: Black in America This week
CNN presents two ground breaking documentary in the continuing series
Black in America
with Soledad O'Brien investigating.
The Black Woman & Family
Forty years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is Dr.
King’s dream still alive? Soledad O’Brien explores the varied
experiences of black women and families and investigates the reasons behind
the disturbing statistics on single parenthood, disparities between black and
white students in the classroom and the devastating toll of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic in black communities.
The Black Man
In Black Men, Soledad O’Brien evaluates the state of black men in
America and whether there are two Black Americas – success for some but
challenges for far too many more. Examining the personal stories of members of
the 1968 class of Little Rock, Ark.’s Central High School – and those of their
sons and grandsons – O’Brien explores the controversial topics of black men
and fatherhood; disparities between blacks and whites in educational, career
and financial achievement; and factors leading to the dramatic rates of black
male incarceration.

Bale on Parade This
Sunday’s issue of PARADE Magazine contains a revealing interview with
Christian Bale, where he discusses his "kindred spirit" Heath Ledger,
parenting, privacy and more. “I want to talk about Heath,” Bale says of
Ledger. “When you miss somebody, you want to speak about him. He was a unique
character, a very infectious character. He was a good man, and I was glad to
have spent time with him. He was somebody who I’d been seeing on a daily basis
for months. It takes a long time to accept that someone’s gone, when all body
and mind are telling you that this is somebody you will know for a great deal
of time. He was something of a kindred spirit to myself.”
Bale discusses the invasion of Heath’s privacy after his death. “Much of it
has to do with my respect for his daughter, whom he loved so dearly and whom
he would talk about so often. For me, that is of incredible importance. I hope
in a small way that The Dark Knight can be a celebration of his work.
Not like the hideous circus after he died, which I felt was an invasion of a
private life. This movie is not a personal home video. This is what he did. I
hope people will embrace that in the correct fashion.”

Jamie turns 50 The
horror scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis is
turning 50. The outspoken advocate for staying true to yourself salutes
a milestone birthday as only she can, with a f-word photo essay in the
July/August issue of More.
Curtis about turning 50:
“Fifty is a big corner to turn. It used to mean being put out to
pasture, but it’s the opposite with me. I feel more vibrant; I’m more
active than I’ve ever been. The F-word really is freedom. It’s the
freedom to have dropped the rock – the rock of addiction, of family, of
comparisons with other people. It’s being fit and focused and furious.
Curtis about her career:
“I’ve done movies I didn’t care about my entire life. The quality ones
are an accident. That’s the luck of the freaking draw.”
